Remote Access for Accountant
OK, I know this one has been asked several dozen times because I've read several dozen threads about this, but none of those completely address my question(s)
Quickbooks Pro/Plus 2014 in Multiuser mode.
Company file is on the file server with the QB Database Manager Service running.
Clients running on Windows 7 machines with a UNC path (no drive letters) to the company file. - \\server\quickbooks for example.
I know there's a remote access service available via Intuit, but I've read it's only available for QB Premier and above versions. The menu item is available in my Pro/Plus version but I don't want to go through the motions of signing up to find out I need to upgrade. (I *do* need to upgrade due to some limitations in the inventory stuff, but it's not a pressing matter at this point)
Doing some reading, it appears as if the remote access stuff takes over a computer but allows only access to Quickbooks and no other apps. That's all well and good, but each of my machines is someone's workstation and locking them out while the bookkeeper/accountant does their thing is counter-productive.
I suppose I could install the client on the server, but the former IT guy in me is a bit nervous about that. (I hung up the IT hat 10 years ago but there's nobody else here that can do this stuff and the folks we initially outsourced this stuff to are almost clueless)
I've thought about buying a low-end machine to park in the computer room JUST for the accountant to remote in to.
Alternately, I've considering 3rd party solutions like Splashtop, TeamViewer and maybe RDP.
Now, having said all that, the company owner is a die-hard Mac guy and wants access to QB as well. I've suggested buying him a notebook PC but he shot that down pretty quickly. Unless I'm mistaken, there's no Mac client for QB 2014 so Splashtop seems to be the way to go.
Any other suggestions as to how to provide a solution?
