I need to add clients but quickbooks online is not allowed

Hello there, haguilar,

I know how important it is to work on your business without getting any interruptions. Rest assured that I'm here to help you add your clients to QuickBooks.

To properly address your concern, I'd like to know if you encounter an error message while trying to perform the task mentioned above?

If so, and you're an accountant that's using our QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA) version, you can do some troubleshooting steps by opening your account through a private browsing window. This way you can identify if the behavior is the result of browser hang-ups.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts in all supported browsers:

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Internet Explorer: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Log in to your account and try to add your clients again. If it works, you need to go back to your regular browser to clear its cache to ensure this won't happen in the future. You can also use other supported browsers to perform the task as a workaround.

On the other hand, if you're an accountant and subscribed to QuickBooks Online for small business, it'll not allow you to add your clients from there. You need to create an account under QuickBooks Online Accountant and add your client's account.

  1. Go to the Navigation menu, then select Clients.
  2. Click Add client.
  3. Choose whether the client is a Business or Individual.
  4. Fill in all required fields.
  5. Choose whether your firm or your client will pay for the subscription.
  6. Select Compare.
  7. Click your product choice.
  8. An email will be sent to your client to set up a user account.
  9. Click Save.

You can also join your client's QBO company by letting them invite you as an accountant user. Accept their invitation using the user ID that you use to log in to your firm and your client will show in your list once logged in.

Please let me know if you have other concerns by dropping a comment below. I'm always here to help.

People come to QuickBooks Learn & Support for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  1. Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you're explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English.
  2. Be clear and state the answer right up front. Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold.
  3. Be concise. Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won't read it, so break it up. It's okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link.
  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
