I need to amend taxes for children employees for last year.

I forgot to change my children from tax exempt to minimum FICA taxes last year.  How do I correct this and send payment.

Hello there, dminotti,

We can correct your payroll, however, amending the forms can only be done outside Intuit Online Payroll.

The correction process for your employees requires special handling from our payroll expert team. I suggest contacting our Intuit Online Payroll Phone team. They have the tool to correct the payroll for you and proceed with the necessary steps to pay your taxes.

To exempt your children from paying FICA taxes, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to Employees.
  2. Click the name of your employee.
  3. Click Edit on the Taxes & Exemptions section.
  4. Click Edit on the Exemptions section.
  5. Check the box beside Social Security and Medicare.
  6. Click Save.

For additional information with changing employee tax exemptions, you can check this out: Employee payroll tax exemptions.

If you're unable to pay your taxes inside the system, you can manually pay it directly to the agency. Then, record your payment in IOP. There are two ways to do it in the system.

A. Enter prior tax payments:

  1. Select Taxes & Forms then choose Enter Prior Tax History.
  2. Click Add Payment.
  3. Complete the following tax payment details:
    Tax Type
    Liability Period
    Payment Date
    Check Number (optional)
    Notes (optional)
    Tax Items Amounts
  4. Click OK to return to the Prior Tax Payments report screen.

B. Tax due page:

  1. Select Taxes & Forms, then choose Pay Taxes.
  2. Click Create Payment for the tax you want to pay.
  3. Uncheck the Pay Electronically box.
  4. For the Payment Date, select Other, then enter the actual date the payment was made.
  5. Enter the check number.
  6. Click Approve.
  7. You'll be directed to the Print Payment Coupon screen.

You can go through this article for more details in entering tax payments: Recording prior tax payments.

Please let me how the call goes by leaving a comment below if you need additional information.

People come to QuickBooks Learn & Support for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  1. Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you're explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English.
  2. Be clear and state the answer right up front. Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold.
  3. Be concise. Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won't read it, so break it up. It's okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link.
  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
