QB Desktop Accountant 2018 - Upon opening, get error "unable to complete operation and needs to restart" and then works fine after restarting - How to fix?

Just as the title says, every time we first open the program, it gives us this error, and then once opened a second time works just fine.  We looked for any automated entries that may have caused this issue and couldn't find one.  We have repaired the company file (and renamed it to one that doesn't have symbols in it) multiple times (and possibly using multiple different methods) in trying to resolve another issue we had.  Does anyone have some insight for us?

Hi there, sarah.

Thanks for the details that you've provided about the steps that you've used. Since you already tried repairing your company file, this time let's try to repair QuickBooks. This can help us fix program-related issues like this.

To do that:

  1. Restart your computer to close unnecessary programs interfering with QuickBooks.
  2. Create a backup for your company file.
  3. Select Start and then Control Panel
  4. Select Programs and Features. If necessary, choose Uninstall a program.
  5. Select QuickBooks in the list of programs and choose Uninstall/Change.
  6. Select Continue, then, Next.
  7. Select Repair then Next. Wait for the Repair to complete.
  8. Choose Finish,  then restart your computer if prompted.
  9. Don't forget to download the latest QuickBooks release and the latest payroll tax table when you open QuickBooks.

For more details about this process, please refer to this article: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1436997.

If the same thing happens after performing these steps, I'd suggest getting in touch with our phone specialists. They have the tool to check on what's causing this issue.

To reach them:

  1. In your browser, navigate to https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. In the Contact Us page, click the issue or topic.
  4. On the right side, click the Green Phone button to see the support number.

These steps are the keys to getting this issue resolved.

Please get back to me if you have any other questions about this concern. I'll make sure to get back to you as soon as I can.

People come to QuickBooks Learn & Support for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge. We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines:

  1. Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you're explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English.
  2. Be clear and state the answer right up front. Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold.
  3. Be concise. Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won't read it, so break it up. It's okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link.
  4. Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome.
  5. Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.
