Electronically filing federal extensions for an individual or business return
No tax return forms are transmitted when filing an extension electronically. Only the extension form is transmitted.
When e-filing an extension, you should select Start e-file Extension Wizard from the E-File menu.
Yes, the Federal extension can be sent with our without a payment. The balance due can be paid by check, credit card (via the IRS website), or direct debit. See the IRS Instructions for Form 4868 for more details.

No, the return can be filed on paper or electronically after the e-file extension has been Accepted. To file a paper return after e-filing the extension, remove the checkbox(es) on Screen 1, Client Information under the Electronic Returns section. This only applies if the client isn't mandated to e-file.
No, after the extension deadline has passed, the Lacerte e-file center won't accept extension returns with or without payments. Any payments made outside the return filing will need to be made using the method of payment options available on the IRS website.
