When you open QuickBooks Desktop, you may encounter one of the following issues if the settings applied when using high-resolution display are not optimized:

  • The font or the icons on the Home page are either too small or too big than the usual setup.
  • A transaction form does not fit the screen.
  • The sizing icons at the top right of a window do not appear.
  • A field overwrites and hides its label.
  • Missing buttons.
  • Screen is distorted when you maximize or minimize it.
  • Paid status (stamp) is cut off or truncated on Invoices.
  • Home Page is blank.

QuickBooks is designed to work with the default settings of Windows DPI. If you use anything other than the default values, you may see distortion, buttons missing, fields missing, etc.

Windows 10

  1. To open the Control panel, press the Windows+X keys on your keyboard.
  2. Select Appearance and Personalization and select Display.
  3. In the Change size of items section, select Set a custom scaling level.
  4. From the drop-down list, select 100%, then select OK. You can also drag the ruler right or left to adjust the setting.
  5. Select Apply, then sign out of your computer for the changes to take effect.

Windows 8/8.1

  1. Right-click on your Desktop, then select Screen Resolution.
  2. At the bottom of the Display settings, select Make text and other items larger or smaller.
  3. Make sure the checkbox for Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays is not checked.
  4. Drag the slider to Smaller - 100%. This keeps text and other items at normal size.
  5. Save your work, then reboot your computer for this change to take effect.

Windows 7

  1. Right-click on your Desktop, then select Screen Resolution.
  2. At the bottom of the Display settings, select Make text and other items larger or smaller.
  3. Select the circle next to Smaller - 100%. This keeps text and other items at normal size.
  4. Save your work, then reboot your computer for this change to take effect.

Solution 4: Edit the screen resolution settings on your computer

Windows 10

  1. Right-click on your Desktop, then select Display settings.
  2. From the left pane, select Display, then choose Advanced display settings.
  3. Select Display. If you have more than one display connected to your PC, select the display you want to change.
  4. In the Resolution section, select a screen resolution that is at least 1024 x 768 or higher*, then select Apply.
  5. Select Keep changes. Note: You will have 15 seconds to either Keep changes or Revert before the window automatically goes back to its previous resolution.

*1920 x 1080 is highly recommended.
