Learn how to troubleshoot printing problems in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Can you view forms or paychecks, but cannot print them? Or maybe you can't see them after trying to view them? We share troubleshooting tips for printing in Online Payroll.

Is your printer on?

If not, turn the printer on. Once on, refresh your page and retry. If you have multiple printers on your network, check to ensure that the desired printer is set as the default printer.

Did you delete cookies and temporary internet files?

Clear your cookies and temporary internet files for optimal browser performance. If it has been some time since you've done this, it may resolve your issue. This can be done from your Tools drop-down menu in Firefox.

Have you chosen the correct paycheck types you're trying to print?

Intuit Online Payroll and Quickbooks Online Payroll

You may experience trouble if you accidentally chose the wrong paycheck types. For example, you may have accidentally indicated that you will be printing plain paper stubs when you actually wish to print on pre-printed check stock. To check which type you indicated, from within the payroll program:

  1. Go to Setup, then Preferences, then Paycheck Printing

QuickBooks Online Payroll

  1. Select the Gear icon, then Payroll Settings.
  2. Under Preferences select Paycheck Printing.

Only QuickBooks compatible preprinted check stock can be used for printing.


Are you printing from the same computer you usually print from?

If you're not, check to ensure that the desired printer is set as the default printer.

Have you installed updates or programs recently?

Occasionally, certain updates will reset default settings to a pop-up blocker on your browser or turn it back on if it was previously turned off. If you're using Firefox, these settings can be found under the Tools drop-down menu toward the top of your browser.


When you click "View & Print", does the screen flash?

Most often, this is caused by a pop-up blocker. We recommend that you turn off pop-up blockers while using our site. Delete cookies in Firefox.

If this does not resolve the issue, try adding us as a trusted site. This can be accomplished through the Security section of your browser's Internet Options section.

Do you have Adobe Acrobat or Reader installed on your computer?

In order to print paychecks or view forms, you need to install and register Adobe Acrobat or Reader. On a Windows computer, you can check this by clicking the Start button, then go to the Programs & Features section (or Add/Remove Programs in older versions). Adobe Acrobat or Reader will appear in this list if it is installed.

If you don't have either one, you can find it at adobe.com.

Are you using an outdated version of Adobe?

Outdated versions of Adobe might not work when trying to view pay stubs and forms. To check which version you're using on a Windows computer, click the Start button, then go to Programs & Features (or Add/Remove Programs on older versions). This menu will display which version of Acrobat or Reader you're using. The latest versions of Adobe Reader can be located on the Adobe website.

Did you try to change the page scale?

Are your paychecks off-centered on the page? Or is the alignment look "off"? You may be able to achieve a better fit by changing the page scaling. After selecting Print, select Shrink to Printable Area from the Page Scaling drop-down:

Did you try saving paychecks or forms to your desktop, then printing from there?

If you are able to view the forms, but not able to print them, try saving them to your desktop. Once saved to your desktop, close the version you were viewing, then open the version that was just saved to your desktop and try printing from there.

Did you try printing as an image (for Acrobat only)?

Once the paychecks or form is open in the Adobe window, select the Print icon. In the print menu, select the Advanced button, then choose Print as Image. Note that printing as an image may take slightly longer than usual to print.

How many checks are you trying to print?

If you are trying to print 50 or more checks at once, you may receive a message that reads: "You are trying to view and print more than 50 checks. You can only view and print 50 checks at a time." Should you receive this message, select to print less than 50 checks at a time, and print in batches.

Have you completed entering all of your banking information? (Blank check stock printing only)

Intuit Online Payroll

  1. Select Setup, then Preferences, choose Paycheck Printing.
  2. Make sure that Blank Check Stock is selected, then OK.
  3. A screen appears prompting you to enter your banking information.

Quickbooks Online Payroll

  1. Select Gear icon, then Payroll Settings, and Preferences.
  2. Choose Paycheck Printing in the Preferences section.
  3. Make sure that Blank Check Stock is selected, then OK.
  4. A screen appears prompting you to enter your banking information.

Intuit Full Service Payroll and Quickbooks Online Payroll Full Service

Currently blank check stock is not supported.
