Learn how federal state tax forms can be filed in Online Payroll.

You can file your company's federal and state tax forms manually or electronically in Intuit Online Payroll. We'll show you the steps to do both.

Before you file

Federal and state forms are only available with an Enhanced subscription. If you have a Basic subscription, upgrade your subscription to Enhanced.

To upgrade:

  1. Select the Setup tab.
  2.  Under Company and Account select Upgrade Service. Then select Billing and Service.
  3. Select Payroll Enhanced. Then select Continue.

When filing state tax forms the method in which you file depends on your state's requirement:

  • For some states, we allow electronic filing of your tax form with your electronic tax payment.
  • For some states, we provide you with a pre-filled form that you will need to print, sign, and send in to the address we provide.
  • For some states, you'll need to use original, scannable forms provided by the state agency. We'll make available a worksheet that has the data you need to enter on each line of the form. You just need to copy the worksheet data to the original form. And then sign and send the form to the state agency.

File federal and state tax forms electronically

Here's how to file the forms if you're signed up for our electronic services

  1. Make your tax payment, if there's one that corresponds to your tax form.
  2. Select the To Do tab.
  3. Select the tax form that you want to file. (It's usually under It's time to file forms.)
  4. On the page for the tax form, select View. If any questions appear, answer them.
  5. Review the information on the tax form. To print a copy for yourself, right-click in the tax form window. Then select Print (or for Mac, press Command-P).
  6. Close the tax form window.
  7. Return to the page for the tax form. Make sure the File Electronically checkbox is marked. Then select Submit.

We automatically archive a copy of the form.

Here's how to file the forms if you're not signed up for our electronic services

  1. Make your tax payment, if there's one that corresponds to your tax form.
  2. Select the To Do tab.
  3. Select the tax form that you want to file. (It's usually under It's time to file forms.)
  4. On the page for the tax form, select View. If any questions appear, answer them.
  5. Review the information on the tax form.
  6. Right-click in the tax form window. Then choose Print (or for Mac, press Command-P).
  7. Sign and send the tax form. You can find the address to send the tax form on the instructions page. It is usually the last page when you print the tax form.
  8. Close the tax form window.
  9. Return to the page for the tax form. Then select Archive to save a copy of the form.
Note Forms W-2 are a special case. You don't need to sign up for our electronic services to electronically file Forms W-2. For more information, see Prepare and file W-2 forms.
