After converting your company data or trying to open a QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale file, you get one of the following messages:

  • 181016 "Problem Could not open the QuickBooks Point of Sale data: [Company Name]."
  • 181021 "QuickBooks POS Message: 181021 "Problem Could not create company: [Company Name].
  • Errors: Could not connect to database or Could not load database

The errors could be caused by any of the following:

  • The company name used on your network is not unique.
  • There are more than one versions of QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale installed on your computer.
  • You are not logged into Windows as an Administrator.
  • The QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale company data folder may be corrupted.
  • A firewall is blocking the ports that the QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale database manager is trying to access.
  • TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is not installed, is disabled, or is damaged.


  • Make sure your computer meets the minimum System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale.
  • Ensure that you have no older versions of the software installed on your computer. If older versions are present, uninstall them using the Add or Remove Programs function in the Windows control panel.
  • Reboot your computer.

Note: Attempt to convert or open the company file data after each of the solution you try.

Solution 1: Ensure you are logged into Windows as an Administrator

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows + R to open the Run window.
  2. Enter Control Panel, then select OK.
  3. Choose the View by dropdown, then select Small icons.
  4. Select User Accounts.
  5. Select Manage another account.
  6. Ensure that the account type logged in is an Administrator.

Solution 2: Verify there is only one company file using the name

  1. Choose File > Company Operations > Open Existing Company.
  2. In the Existing Company data window, if the same company name appears more than once, rename/delete the duplicate file.

Solution 3: Test for possible data problem

  1. Choose File > Company Operations.
  2. Select Create new company, then choose Next. Give this file a unique name such as Test.
  3. If the error does not recur in the Test company file, open your original company file directly:
  4. Choose File > Company Operations.
  5. Select Restore from Backup, then choose Next.
  6. Select Browse to alternate backup file, then choose Browse.
  7. Go to: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks Point of Sale XX\Data\[your company name]
  8. Select the file qbpos.db, then choose Open > Ok.
  9. Enter a new, unique name for your company file, then select Ok.

Solution 4: Rename the Company file

  1. Go to the location of your company file: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX\Data\[your company name]
  2. Right-click the file name, select rename and enter the new file name.
    Note: If you do not want to change the entire name, you may add a letter or a number at the end of the name.
  3. Re-open your Company File in QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale.

Solution 5: QBPOS Troubleshoot Connection Tool

Use the QBPOS Troubleshoot Connection Tool to verify:

  • Database manager is initialized properly.
  • QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale is installed as a Server.
  • Firewalls are not blocking database access
  • TCP/IP protocol is enabled.
