Fix bank error 103 in QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Self-Employed

Learn how to fix error 103 when you connect your bank to QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If you see error 103, it usually means the user ID or password is incorrect for the bank account you’re trying to connect to. Here’s how to fix this error for both existing and new connections.

Step 1: Confirm your sign-in info is correct

It’s always good to make sure you have the correct user ID and password for the bank account:

  1. Open a new window in your web browser and go directly to your bank’s website. Make a note of your bank's website for later.
  2. Sign in with the user ID and password you have.
    Note: If you have separate accounts with the bank (such as a business account and a personal account), sign in to the account you want to fix in QuickBooks.
  3. If you sign in successfully, then you know the user ID and password are correct. If you get a sign-in error, follow your bank’s instructions to get your user ID, reset your password, or both.

Step 2: Turn on third-party access if your bank requires it

Some banks need your permission to connect your account to another service, including QuickBooks Online. While you visit your bank’s website, check if your bank has this requirement. If so, follow your bank’s instructions to turn it on. Or, contact your bank if you need help.

Step 3: Enter your bank sign-in info in QuickBooks

For a new connection

If you’re setting up a new account, you can connect your bank account like normal.

For an existing connection

  1. Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select the bank or credit card account you need to update.
  3. Select Edit ✎.
  4. Select Edit sign-in info.
  5. If your web browser auto-fills the user ID and password fields, clear them. This ensures your browser doesn’t put in old info by mistake.
  6. Manually type in the user ID and password for your bank account.
  7. Select Update.
  1. Go to Transactions.
  2. Select the New transaction ▼ dropdown and choose Manage connections.
  3. For the bank account you want to update, select the Vertical ellipses icon.icon and choose Edit sign-in info.
  4. If your web browser auto-fills the user ID and password fields, clear them. This ensures your browser doesn’t put in old info by mistake.
  5. Manually type in the user ID and password for your bank account. If your bank offers a Show option, select it so you can confirm you entered the password correctly.
  6. Select Update.

Note: If needed, you can manually upload the transactions to QuickBooks.

Do you see the wrong security question when attempting to connect your bank account?

If you enter wrong login credentials, your bank may return an incorrect Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) security question instead of an error for increased protection. This can be confusing ‌if you believe you are using the correct login credentials.

To solve the issue, you can either:

  • Double-check your login credentials at the bank’s website using a private browsing session.
  • Connect to the correct bank from the available options.
