You are getting one or more of the following errors when updating payroll or QuickBooks

  • Error 15240: The payroll update did not complete successfully
  • File Exists: The file you specified cannot be opened. Make sure that it is not being used by another program
  • Internet connection error: unknown error
This is usually caused by Internet Explorer security settings, firewall settings or system date and time settings.


Solution 1: Run QuickBooks as Administrator

Right-click the QuickBooks icon on your Desktop and select Run as Administrator.

Solution 2: Verify the system date and time settings

  1. Click the time display on your system tray and select Change date and time settings.
  2. Set the correct date and time.
  3. Click Apply and OK.

Solution 3: Add Windows permissions to QuickBooks installation folders

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\.
    64-bit users: C:\Program Files (x86)
  3. Right-click the Intuit folder and select Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab and Advanced button.
  5. Ensure that the owner of this folder is the User group. If you have anything other than the User group, you need to take ownership of the Intuit folder.
  6. Try downloading the updates. If you are still experiencing the same issue, do the outlined steps above to the following Intuit folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit
      64-bit users: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intuit
    • C:\ProgramData\Intuit
    • C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Intuit

Solution 4: Verify the Microsoft Internet Explorer settings

  1. From the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down and select Use SSL2.0 and SSL3.0.
  4. Click Apply and OK.

Solution 5: Check your third party firewall

  • Consult the developer of your third party firewall for instruction on how to adjust the settings and allow QuickBooks to download and install updates.
  • Ensure the following files are given access to go through your firewall.
    • qbw32.exe (QuickBooks executable file)
    • qbupdate.exe (QuickBooks update executable file)
  • Verify that ports 80 and 443 are not disabled.
