QuickBooks Desktop writes messages about what is happening in QuickBooks to a specific log file.

  • In Windows, the file is called QBWIN.log
  • In Mac, the file is called QuickBooks.log (applies to US only)

The log file contains QuickBooks Desktop messages, as well as information created by Verify Data, Rebuild Data and Condense Data utilities (applies to US only). It does not show General Protection Fault or Invalid Page Fault messages and messages or errors from other programs. To review data damage recorded by QBWIN.LOG, press Ctrl + F, enter “Begin Verify” and find the last entry of Begin Verify on your log file. The file includes date and time stamps with each log entry to help you identify the most recent entries.

Errors like "IsQBInUseLockFilePresentAndLocked...LCK can't be found. Error = 2" in QBWIN.log is not a sign of data damage and should not be considered as one when troubleshooting data damage.
