Safe mode loads Windows with the minimum number of drivers needed to function. Intuit strongly recommends that before restarting in Safe mode, you know the administrator passwords for your Windows installations.

Note: Since this process requires that you restart your computer, be sure to print out this article and read it completely before you begin.

Detailed instructions

Restart your computer:

While your computer is restarting, but before Windows launches , follow the steps below: 

  1. During the restart process repeatedly tap the F8 on the keyboard. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.

    1. If the Start menu is unavailable because your operating system is not responding, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Task List or Manager (the name varies, depending on your version of Windows). Choose the appropriate option from the list to restart the computer.   

            Windows 7:          Windows 8: 

    2. If your computer still fails to restart, press your computer's reset button (located somewhere on the computer, not the monitor) or turn the computer off and wait approximately 30 seconds before turning it on again.

Note: The Safe Mode w/ Networking option should allow Internet access. You should use this option if your error is the result of complications with Internet accessibility. If the error is not the result of complications accessing a secure web site, use the Safe Mode option.
