QuickBooks closes when you restore a Portable Company File (PCF)

When trying to restore a portable Company, QuickBooks closes with no errors.

How to fix it

To resolve this issue:

  1. Ensure that the file is actually a portable company file
    1. Right-click on the file
    2. Select Properties
    3. Under the General tab, the full name of the file should include the file extension .QBM
  2. Ensure that the portable company file is being opened correctly:
    1. Go to File > Open or Restore Company...
    2. Select Restore a portable file
    3. Select the portable file and click Open
    4. Click Next
    5. Browse to the location where the restored file will be saved
    6. Click Save
  3. Ensure that the proper version of QuickBooks is being used to open the portable company file (for example, if the portable company file was create in Enterprise Solutions, it cannot be restored in QuickBooks Premier or Pro - also, if the portable file was created in a later version of QuickBooks [like 2015], it cannot be restored in an earlier version of QuickBooks [like 2014])

Note: QuickBooks Pro & Premier are compatible with one another

  4. Copy the portable file to the Desktop
  5. Rename the portable file to a short, single word (for example, if the file appears as Company Name.QBM, change the name to Comp.QBM - if file extensions are off, the file extension, .QBM, will not be visible)
  6. If the issue persists, open a sample company file
  7. From the sample company file, create a portable file and restore it
  8. If the sample portable file is restored successfully, proceed to Step 10. If the sample portable file is not restored, proceed to Step 12.
  9. Have the person who sent the portable file use another media to send the file again (for example, if this file was emailed, have the file sent again by cd, flash drive or emailed through another email account)
  10. If the steps above have not resolved the issue, try to restore the portable file as you complete each step below. If one step does not resolve the issue, continue with the next step and try to restore the portable file again until you are successful
  11. Create a new Windows Admin user called Test (see instructions at Microsoft Help & Support site) and login as this user.
