Install multiple versions of the QuickBooks Database Server Manager

You need more information about installing more than one version of the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on a server because you use multiple years and/or versions of QuickBooks.

Overview

The QuickBooks Database Server Manager (QBDBSM) exists primarily to create network data files (*.nd) for any company files stored on the host computer. When working in a multiuser environment with multiple versions of QuickBooks, the Database Server Manager for each version of QuickBooks must be installed on the host computer. However, even though you may install multiple versions of the QBDBSM you will only see one version of it that you can open. This is because processes are installed with each version but not separate pieces of software.

Detailed information

In order to avoid installation conflicts, the Database Server managers must be installed in chronological order from the oldest version to the newest.

For example: In an environment with QuickBooks 2013, 2014 and 2015 installed, install the 2013 Database Server Manager first, followed by 2014 and 2015. If you use QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions (QBES), you should only install the QBES Database Server Managers - the work for both QuickBooks and QuickBooks Enterprise files.

Loading the Database Server Manager for each year, ensures that that year’s database service is running in the background.  In the Windows Services interface (accessible via the Windows Control Panel) these services will be listed as "QuickBooksdbXX," where XX represents the version number (ex. "25" is for QB 2015 and "24" for QB 2014).
