Windows Vista

Welcome to the Vista wiki. This collection will help users of Intuit product who also use Vista. Vista is the newest version of Microsoft Windows and was released in January of 2007. Although changes to the interface did quite a bit to change the look and feel of the operating system, the biggest changes took place in the area of security. Knowing how to address the security needs can help make installation and usage a better experience. Things like the User Account Control add greater security and lead to less accidental deletion issue but also require attention and can complicate installations. Please visit Microsoft's Vista resource center for specific information about this Operating system.

Overview

Note: When running a 2006 or earlier version of QuickBooks or version 6.0 or earlier of Enterprise Solutions on a Windows Vista computer, some features will not work properly, such as QuickBooks Payroll Services, the QuickBooks Timer and the Shipping Manager.

Although not all issues encountered when installing or running older versions of Intuit products on Windows Vista can be resolved, the most common issues can be addressed quickly and easily. Resolutions for the four most common situations are listed below and can be applied without difficulty and without lengthy steps:

  • "This Program has known compatibility issues" when installing QuickBooks:
Click Run Program to continue with the installation process.

  • "There was a problem accessing the fonts section in the Windows registry" when installing QuickBooks:
While this message will not stop the installation from completing, there may be problems with payroll forms if the fonts do not install correctly.

  • "QuickBooks and Microsoft Windows Vista Alert" when starting QuickBooks:

  1. If Don't show this warning again is available on this window, select it.
  2. Click Start QuickBooks.
  • "Runtime Error: Abnormal program termination" when starting QuickBooks:

Log into Windows as an administrator and follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the desktop shortcut icon for QuickBooks and select Properties.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the available list.

Will it work with Vista?

You may have a new printer, a camera that you received for Christmas or you just need to install some software. The biggest question is, will it work with Vista? You can find out by checking the Windows Vista Compatibility Center at Microsoft's website. QuickBooks versions 2007 or later were programmed to work with Vista.
Recommended System Requirements (from some fellow users and POS ProAdvisors):
  • Vista Business/Ultimate 32-Bit -- QuickBooks will run under a 64-Bit OS, but there are known issues, especially with regards to printing, that could cause problems
  • 2-3 GB RAM (32-bit), 3-4 GB (64-bit) -- Please note that 32-bit processors cannot access more than about 3.5 GB of RAM. Also, you need a 64-bit Processor to properly use a 64-Bit version of Windows
