If you are trying to run QuickBooks on a 64 bit version of Microsoft Vista you will most likely run into printing problems. The following will work with QuickBooks 2007, 2008 and 2009. Please note that updates to Windows or QuickBooks may change system settings back to "defaults", which will produce these errors again. The best way to test this after any update is to try to save a report as PDF. If this fails you will need to go through these steps again.

QuickBooks has published a Knowledge Base article about this in their support web site – article 1007337 Please note the following:

  • If you have installed QuickBooks 2007 on the computer, and then either QuickBooks 2008 or 2009, there is a conflict between the versions. If you have this situation see Intuit Knowledgebase article 1011094.
  • If you are using the FaxTalk Communicator software you will find a conflict with QuickBooks.
  • The solution is Intuit’s solution has you start off by doing a “repair” of your QuickBooks installation. For most situations this is not necessary. The problem is not a damaged installation, it is an improperly installed driver (the “repair” will reinstate the error). However, if you want to do this, see KB article 1010399.

Solution 1 as outlined in article 1007337

  1. Log in to your Vista system as a user with administrative rights.
  2. Select the Control Panel from your Windows menu.
  3. Select Printers from the Control Panel.
  4. Locate the QuickBooks PDF Converter in the printer list, right click on it to get a menu, select Run as administrator, and then select Properties.
  5. In the Properties window, select the Ports tab, then click the Add Port button.
  6. Select Local Port and click the New Port button.
  7. Enter PDF1 for the new port name, and click OK, then close the Printer Ports window.
  8. Check the box by the PDF1 port then select the Advanced tab.
  9. Select the Amyuni Document Converter 300 from the Driver dropdown box. The Print directly to the printer option is selected, which hides a feature you must change. Select Spool print documents and then un-check the Enable advanced printing features box.
  10. Select Print directly to the printer again. Click Apply and then OK.
  11. In the Printer window of the Control Panel make sure that the proper printer driver is selected as the “default” – not the QuickBooks PDF Converter. This is a step that Intuit left out in their article.
  12. Reboot your computer – the changes won’t take effect until you do.
The additional steps that may be required:
  1. Right click on the Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
  2. Select the Processes tab, find splWOW64.exe, and click the end process button.
  3. Reboot your computer after this step.
If you run QuickBooks and get odd “printer error” messages, you may need to reset your QuickBooks printer preference file. Locate the file QBPRINT.QBP, which should be in your c:/program data/QuickBooks/2009 folder. Rename this file to QBPRINT.OLD

Solution 2

Download a different Amunyi driver.

This process is very similar to the one above, except that it has you install a different driver than the one you already have in your system. This is a 64 bit compatible version of the driver. Download the zip file from this location and save it on your computer: 64 bit compatible version

  1. As before, run this procedure when you are logged in with administrator rights.
  2. When you open this file you may be asked for a password – enter “amyuni”.
  3. Extract the file to a folder in your computer, and run the file named “install.exe”.
  4. You will get a warning that this is an unsigned program – go ahead and run it.
  5. A window will open that will show the installation progress.
  6. When it is complete and you click “OK” you may get a Vista warning saying that the installation might not have installed correctlyJust click the button that says the program installed correctly.
Now go through the steps in the first method with the noted changes:

  • In step 4 select the Amyuni Document Converter instead of the QuickBooks PDF Converter.
  • In step 5 you should already have the PDF1 port – so you can scroll down, make sure that it is checked, then click Configure Port instead of adding it. Skip steps 6 & 7.
  • In step 9 select the Amyuni Document Converter 2.51 instead of the Amyuni Document Converter 300, then continue as before
Why doesn't anything print?

There are several things you can try:

Make sure the printer is turned on and is indicating that it is "online."
All printers have some type of indicator to let you know they are ready and waiting to receive data. Check that the printer is in this "online" state.

Try printing from another application to verify that Windows can still communicate with the printer. Since Windows is controlling the printer, a good test is to print from WordPad (the basic Windows word processor). During this test, be sure you select the same printer you are having difficulty with in QuickBooks. If you can print from WordPad, then the problem is probably related to QuickBooks. Also try to print another type of document or form from within QuickBooks to isolate the problem area, and then confine your changes to that setup area only.

Check the print queue and look for stalled printing jobs on your printer.

To open the print queue:

To do this task in Windows XP:

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Click Settings and then click Printers and Faxes.
  3. Double-click the icon of the printer you want to view. If there are documents listed under your printer name, click the first one to select it and if it is stalled, press the DEL key to delete it from the list.
To do this task in Windows Vista:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and click Control Panel.
  2. Under Hardware and Sound, click Printer.
  3. Double-click the icon of the printer you want to view. If there are documents listed under your printer name, click the first one to select it and if it is stalled, press the DEL key to delete it from the list.

Make sure your printer driver is current. Go to the Web site for your printer manufacturer and follow the instructions for downloading and installing the most current driver for your printer

Renaming the Qbprint.qbp file

The Qbprint.qbp file contains a data line for each form in QuickBooks. It has a line for invoices and it has a line for journal entries. When you print a form, QuickBooks pulls the form information and uses in to print the form. If you change the selections on the Printer Setup window or the Print One Form window, then QuickBooks writes the new information into the Qbprint.qbp file.

When you rename the Qbprint.qbp file, QuickBooks recreates the file from default data. All custom settings that you have entered are lost. Renaming the file is the preferred troubleshooting tool because you rename the old file and recover your custom settings.

Finding the Qbprint.qbp File:

  • Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and navigate to the correct directory for your version of QuickBooks:
QuickBooks 2007 and higher:
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\[QuickBooks Version]
  • Windows Vista: C:\Program Data\Intuit\[QuickBooks Version]
QuickBooks 2006 and earlier:
      • C:\Program Files\Intuit\[QuickBooks Version]
  • Right-click the Qbprint.qbp file, select Rename, and enter Qbprint.old.
  • Open QuickBooks.
  • Click the File menu and select Printer Setup.
  • Click any one of the transactions in the Form Name drop-down and click OK. This will create a newQbprint.qbp file. (This does not have to be done for each transaction.)
  • Open and print the transaction that was having problems.

Print checks in QuickBooks using Peachtree-compatible checks

If you've recently converted to QuickBooks and have leftover Peachtree checks, or if you have third-party checks where the check is in the middle of the page (with the stubs at the top and bottom), you may not be able to use your Peachtree checks with QuickBooks.

We recommend that you purchase new checks with the check on top of the page and two stubs on the bottom. There are significant alignment issues with printing Peachtree checks from QuickBooks, and a possibility that your checks may be rejected by your financial institution as a result.

How do I Print partial page checks?

Important: These instructions assume you've already set up your check printing options (logo, address, fonts, etc.) the first time you printed checks from QuickBooks. The following covers only the specific steps you need for printing a partial page of one or two checks.

  1. Select Print from a check to open the Print Checks window.
  2. On the setting tab, locate the Check Style section and select either Standard or Wallet to display a Checks on 1st page section.
  3. In the Checks on 1st Page section, type 1 or 2 for the number of checks on your partial page.
  4. Click the Partial Page tab and select the orientation for your check
  5. Place your check into the printer the same way you feed in an envelope and Click Print.

If there's a problem while printing your checks, press Esc to cancel the printing process

What type of check stock can I use?

If you are printing checks, you must order checks that specifically are QuickBooks-compatible (available from Intuit, CostCo and other sources) that contain preprinted account and check numbers, as QuickBooks can't print either of these; these are printed using magnetic ink (MICR). QuickBooks can only fill in the actual payment information. You can't print checks on blank check stock (unless you also have an MICR printer) or plain paper.

What if my checks printed in reverse order?

Some printers default to printing pages in reverse order (or printing the last page first).

If you print checks, this may cause you to waste and reprint checks when your printed check numbers don't match your check register.

You can usually resolve this issue by changing your printer Properties settings.

To do this task in Windows XP:

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Click Settings and then click Printers and Faxes.
  3. Select your printer.
  4. Go to the File menu and click Properties.
  5. Find the option that determines whether the first or last page prints first.
  6. Make and save your change.

To do this task in Windows Vista:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and click Control Panel.
  2. Under Hardware and Sound, click Printer.
  3. Find the option that determines whether the first or last page prints first.
  4. Make and save your change.
Why does a form in which I selected the "To be printed" checkbox continue to appear in the "Select [Form] to Print" window even after I printed it?

To resolve this issue:
  1. Find and open the numberless form in QuickBooks by selecting the appropriate function from the Customer, Vendor or Employee Center
  2. Clicking the Previous button until the form is located and open.
You can:
  1. Clear the To be printed checkbox,
  2. Enter an inconspicuous character in the # field
  3. Click Save & Close.
