Which States follow Federal E-Filing Registration with no separate e-file registration required at the state level?

ProSeries : 2011

Does anyone know where I can find a summary list of which states allow tax preparers who are registered at for Federal efiling would also be allowed to efile in other states. I'm wondering if I need to separately register to e-file in CA, NC and WI.

A train station is where the train stops. A bus station is where the bus stops. On my desk, I have a work station

Didn't know that tool existed - thanks.

Not sure that answers my original question though -- which states require an actual registration (by the tax preparer) and which ones just follow the IRS e-file registration?

I do not think any states except NM & OR require any separate registration to e-file.  NY requires preparer registration, but not registering to be able to e-file.  I know WI & CA require no registration but I have no tarheels to speak of.

I didn't know that NM required a separate registration to efile?

CA requires Registration to work as a paid tax preparer in CA. Registration requires a certain amount of CPE each year, carrying a $5000 tax preparer bond, and an annual fee to the state.

When anyone doing nothing needs help, I will gladly help that person do nothing.

OK -- but that's just if you WORK THERE. If you're an out of state preparer, I would doubt they require the same registration. That would be a nightmare for the state to manage. Same requirement for an out of state taxpreparer? Any know?

The California Tax Education Council (CTEC) was established by the California State Legislature to promote competent tax preparation within the State of California. More info a www.ctec.org.

An out-of-state preparer filing the odd return in either CA or OR does not need to register in either of those states.  But an in-state preparer in either of those states must meet licensing/registration requirements.

Hail Cleo-Cat-Tra, Queen of Denial. I didn't do it.
