The solution

Hi Lisa66!

You may restore your file anywhere you would like on your computer or even on a network drive. If you are unsure where to save your file, I suggest putting it on your Desktop or in your My Documents folder. You can always move it to another location later.

What I mean is, where "should" I save it when asked? Right now I have to go to my C drive, got to program files, go to Intuit and then save it in the data file.. is this correct? And if I don't override the file that is there, the company files will just keep piling up, won't they?

You are correct in saving your backup to your existing data file and the C: drive is where QuickBooks places your file by default. As long as the information that exists in your backup is the information you want your current data file to contain, then replacing the existing file is the right thing to do. If you were to restore (and replace the existing data file) a backup from two years ago, just remember that you will lose two years worth of data.

It's always a good idea to have multiple backups saved (I would save those on some form of removable media like a flash drive), but for your main, working company data file...you should keep just one. That elliminates the risk of someone else in your company opening and working out of the wrong one.
