What to charge a beauty salon client?

Hi!. I just graduated with my bachelors in accounting & I'm in the process of getting my proadvisor certification. I offered my services to my hair stylist because I know that he is very behind in his bookkeeping. He's backed up since January.

My question is how do I charge him to catch him up and to keep his books afterwards? He has a total of 4 employees. Should I charge him per transaction or just a flat fee? I also offered him payroll, how would I charge him for that? About how many transactions per month would a salon that has 3 stylist and 1 nail tech? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

When you don't know the amount of time you will spend, and how the people keep their receipts, time, etc. I always start with an hourly wage for the first month or two. Type up an agreement with hourly wage that you will receive, how you will record your time and when you get paid; and timeframe to evaluate the posibility of going to a set fee (weekly or monthly) etc. I would check for average salary for this type of position for your area (most times you can obtain this from your local Chamber of Commerce or on the internet). This works for me!

SRAID, thank you very much for your reply. I actually have an appointment with my local chamber of commerce a few hours before I see my client. Do clients feel comfortable with paying by the hour if there's no actual way for them to know in reality how long it took you? Or is there a way that quickbooks tracks the time spent for you?

You might want to submit a proposal with a set-up fee and a separate monthly fee (once you are up-to-date). I would charge an hourly rate, then when you actually get into the books you can always go back and communicate that it will take you longer or shorter than you proposed. It's better to submit a proposal for more hours and come in under.

As for tracking time, taking notes of what you have worked on is important. Then when you submit your invoice they can see what specifically you spent your time on. You can also use this information for your future clients.

Hope this helped and good luck.
