Website building for newbies (dummies)

I have read, read, read and read some more on websites and SEO's, AdSense, URLs, Link building, and so on. This is all so new to me and might as well be Greek! I have someone that will be building my website for me and as far a I know is knowledgable - at least that what others have told me but I'm not so trusting and I'm also one who wants to know as much as I can at all things in my business - especally those I"m throwing money at. I have said all that to ask this - is there a place I can go to educate myself on web building, web hosting, cost that are involved and etc. Something in generic terminology?

Hi there,

Have you checked this web designer's references? If you don't trust him/her, then maybe you should not hire them.

As for a source to educate yourself on web design and hosting, etc. - try www.webmasterworld.com or http://forums.digitalpoint.com/

Also, I have blog posts on my site that may be helpful for SEO resources. www.cmsearchmarketing.com.

Good luck.

I highly recommend buying your domain. Choosing a Wordpress template, and then choose a host for that site (we use Siteground).

We used a free template that we customized for our Bigg Success site (see my profile for the link).

I bought a customizable template for my Bigg Studio site (see my profile for the link).

You don't have to be a designer to have a nice looking site, and the cost is so low to get started.

We pay a monthly retainer to our IT guy who has been teaching me so much as we've progressed. Could be a good idea for you so you will have assistance while you are learning the ropes!

(Last post didn't take for some reason)

We use a hosted service called HOMESTEAD.COM to great success and RAVE reviews from our visitors.

I am not a "computer guy" but I AM a small business owner with NO budget for IT. We started using Homestead a year ago and haven't looked back since. They went out and got our names for us, hosted them and offer us email addresses with our domain name in them and great templates to build from. Visit our website and see for yourself- www.jbarhtexasfoods.com. We have 4 websites and they are all unique but connected together.

Their templates are great and easy to add your won content to. I probably spent a couple hours on each one and then only make changes as needed. Their site builder program cuts out the irritating FTP process and makes it so I can get back from an event and have it live on my website before the attendees get home and check it out!

We spend about $30 a month for everything including about 12 website names, 12 email addresses @jbarhtexasfoods.com and great support and tools.

Hi - I use Microsoft Office Small Business. It is great for a new website. Its super cheap and has all the templates you need. the website is office.live.com. There are a ton of forum topics through there to help you get started and people with no web development background can use it. You can check out my website and if you have any questions, just email me. (I don't work for MSFT)

My wife and I use the tools provided by our web host of choice. There are a few great hosts out there that offer great assistance in building a website without hiring a web designer. Having services like this has given us the ability to have complete control over our site and has given us the knowledge in website building. We have been able to come up with 80 pages of content and continue to add pages without additional costs. If you would like to see how this type of process works for the beginner you can visit their site at www.to-build-your-website.com

BEST WISHES!
