War bonds (?!?)

ProSeries

I live in the house that belonged to my parents for 50+ years.  A few days ago, my wife discovered a stack of $25 War Bonds, issued in 1942, to my mother in her maiden name.  Probably about 50 of them, tucked in the back of a closet in the basement.  Are they negotiable?  Are they possibly more valuable as collectors items? FWIW, my mother is still alive, but is 93, blind, and in an assisted living facility. She cannot sign her name, and I have durable POA over all her affairs.

They are worth close to $100 each today.  (Series E bonds)

Here is more information.  They are no longer earning interest.

I guess I could have sort of looked that one up myself, huh?  Sorry to waste your time, folks!  I really didn't expect to be able to find anything.

Okay, I am going to pull the hijack today.

Were you affected by the storms that produced those tornadoes the other day around Dallas?  I thought you were in that area.  I just saw news footage of a reunion between a woman whose house was destroyed and her dog who she thought was dead.  Of course for me that was wonderful.

No, we live in Wichita Falls, about 120 miles NW of Ft. Worth.  The storms blew through here at about 4AM, dumped 4 inches of rain and tons of  quarter-sized hail, and kept us awake the rest of the night..  But they were stlii just forming when they hit us.

OTOH, our 17-year-old granddaughter (who lives with us) was at a convention of student council officers in Arlington when it all came down.  Arlington was ground zero for several of the tornadoes.  But she’s fine.  The Arlington Convention Center (they tell us) was built to withstand a direct hit by an F4 tornado, andTuesday’s were smaller ones.  Bottom line was she got home at about 8 Tuesday night instead of the scheduled 3:30.  Thank God for cell phones, the power was out everywhere.  We were in contact the whole time, and she was never in serious danger, so far as we can tell.

Well, as long as the thread is destroyed....Over the years, I have corresponded off and on with a CA (Chartered Accountant) who lives on the Isle of Man, between Scotland and Ireland, which has about the worst climate I can imagine.  Rarely above the 60s in summer, about 40 in winter, and rain nearly every day.  Blowing rain in the summer, blowing rain and snow in the winter.

This guy cannot believe why anyone would be crazy enough to live in Tornado Alley.  He saw  the movie Twister and it scared him to death.  He envisions us as spending all our time for half the year dodging tornadoes and rebuilding. He thinks the whole area should be uninhabited.  I just tell him that if I ever move from here, it won't be to somewhere that I never have to add any ice to my tea.

Which just goes to show you that....it just goes to show you.

Well, then, your friend would think I am certifiable.  When (if) I ever retire, I am going to take one of those tornado chasing trips.   I have always wanted to chase them, just not around where I live or my loved ones.  They have got to be the most amazing (and scary) forces of nature there is.  I've been in small ones (F1) but nothing like ya'll get in the alley.

Looks as though it'll just be you and me, then, Hillary.  I've actually chased a few storms, back when I was young and foolish.  Now that I'm older and even more foolish, I want to do it some more.

So long as you can tell which way the entire storm is moving, it's not as dangerous as it appears.  Around here, tornadoes almost always move from SW to NE, so if you stay south of it, you're OK.  It gets tricky, though is situations like Dallas the other day, when there are multiple small funnels rather than one Big Daddy.

OK, enough fantasizing.  Back to my AMT problem...

That's right, I forgot.  I was thinking in terms of looking for storms in my neck of the woods where we have hills and trees to block your vision.  Where you are at, you can see it from such a long distance you have time to drive down to Walmart, buy a set of lawn chairs, set out the lawn chairs and watch before you have to move out of the way.

Hey, I go away to try to actually do some tax returns and come back to find a drinking cat calling me certifiable, an addled coyote accusing me of taking some of his anvils, a speedy fairie who at least was not saying bad things about me and a Texan fisherman/Gary Grant who understands where I am coming from.  Thank you, Chuck.

And, yes, if and when I go chasing, I want some space between me and them.  I never said I want to get caught in one.
