Wachovia/Wells Fargo e-filing account problems
The IRS computer did not accept the payment of an individual's tax using a Wachovia account. Wells Fargo bought Wachovia but the RTN and account numbers did not change according to the bank. Any ideas?

Sorry. I'm new to this and I wasn't sure if my first post went through. Thanks for all the help from everyone!

i'm pretty sure the routing number changed--wells fargo has fully assimilated wachovia and edwards now--can find out with a little effort--brokers at both edwards and wachovia owe me favors
You might be correct about the routing number changing when Wachovia was converted to Wells this year. However, Wells told me to continue to use my old Wachovia checks and my bank statement from Wells still has my old Wachovia account number and the old Wachovia RTN listed. I called the bank and as expected, they had no idea what to do. Any thoughts or ideas as to what to do for other Wachovia clients/accounts?
i have calls in to wachovia and ag edwards brokers--should hear back this afternoon
the old checks are good--that is normal
routing numbers of the old institution for direct deposit are like forwarding mail--there's only a set period of time they can be used for
this applies to banks in the private sector--if your client's bank has been bought out-you need to get the new routing number--what's on their old checks may not work--it's somewhere around a year when that old routing number dies and becomes invalid
ROUTING # for wachovia accounts (now wells fargo) 102307164
haven't verified ag edwards
the old wachoivia checks are still good---this is the correct routing number--believe it is good nationwide
When it doubt, double check it here: http://www.fedwiredirectory.frb.org/search_AC...
I keep a list of the most common banks that my clients use. I review each routing number prior to the start of season. And if I get a new one that isn't on the list, I use that link to verify it.

JUST OFF WITH wachovia corporate--that is a good routing number nationwide
FYI--depending on financial transaction type--there are others---but this is the correct routing for direct deposit
Well, my 2011 Form 1040 Federal individual income tax payment did go through as initially planned, even though Form 9325 had line 5 checked that said that my electronic payment was not accepted. I checked my Wells Fargo account online this morning and the payment to the US Treasury Department was made yesterday (02/09/12), as I requested on the return as originally electronically filed on 02/07/12. I am still a bit confused, however. I used the old Wachovia RTN and a/c numbers to file the return. However, some of the responses here seem to say that Wells Fargo is giving a different RTN to use. I wonder if either RTN (the old Wachovia one or the new one being given out over the phone to some) works for 2011 (similar to a mail forwarding as mentioned by another poster)?
according to corporate and as evidenced above the old one doesn't work to my knowledge-but hey you got your money be happy
it is normal for both RTN to work for awhile after a buyout or merger
some banks have a manual configuration--they don't automatically reject deposits without trying to match--even have had a couple reopen a closed account to deposit
EDIT-i just noticed you said PAYMENT-that's a different critter from DEPOSIT-so yea they probably took the time to match that up and correct

Just talked to Wells Fargo. It may depend on your state.
They told me to use old Wachovia routing number (051400549) because Wells Fargo did not previously have a routing number in Virginia.
Edit- Confirmed the above. Go to Wellsfargo.com Customer Service page and click on
How Do I ...
It gives different routing numbers depending on your location.
Thanks CMS_VA-CPA!
Wells Fargo did not have branches in NC prior to the merger. So, for now, the old Wachovia RTN will work.
Thanks Charles. Oddly enough that doesn't match in my case either. 051001414 is what my VA client has. I'm waiting on a K-1 for this client anyway so it's on a back burner but I'm curiously following this thread to see where it ends up!

Rick, Just curious. Have you seen an actual check with this routing number on it? Could he have opened the account at a bank that was taken over by Wachovia and who was then taken over by Wells Fargo?
Haven't looked yet but it's on my to-do list. I'll let you know.
CMS sure you are not confusing wells fargo banks with wells fargo advisors the brokerage--that looks like a bank RTN--don't know the exact code--but believe the first two are an indicator of the institution type
