Check QBs Help > Search > Type in search terms (i.e. Using Classes) and explore this possibility
We use the "Classes" (ie, departments) in our company, and it works great. The tutorials are very informative. Each month I can generate a report called "Profit & Loss By Class", which sounds like exactly what you want.
