Urgent Message: QuickBooks 2008 Not Opening for Some Users

A problem has been encountered by accountants and their clients using QuickBooks? 2008 financial software or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 8.0. The problem does not affect all users and does not affect earlier versions of QuickBooks. We have discovered that a Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework update issued on April 8, 2008, may be triggering problems for some users of all versions of QuickBooks 2008 and QuickBooks Enterprise 8.0. When the problem occurs, the QuickBooks software does not open. Common symptoms include the following: ? The QuickBooks splash screen flashes, and then goes away on launch. ? On launch of QuickBooks an error message says that the Web Connector has failed to initialize. To correct the problem, see KnowledgeBase issue # KB1009275 at: www.quickbooks.com/net. Do Not Uninstall and Re-Install QuickBooks. This problem revolves around an issue with .NET. Uninstalling and re-installing QuickBooks does not address the problem and is not recommended. Apologies for This Interruption -- We know how valuable your time is, and that many of you are working intensely to meet the tax filing deadline. We apologize for this inconvenience but wanted to make sure you were aware of this issue potentially affecting you and your clients. We will continue to rush you new information on this issue, as it becomes available. We are working closely with Microsoft to resolve the issue. QuickBooks Accountant Team

I haven't downloaded any Microsoft updates since I heard about this. Has it been fixed by Microsoft yet? Is it safe to update now?

We are continuing to work with Microsoft on this issue. I will check with our technical teams and issue another post as soon as I get concrete information.

Here's the information that I have from our technical team:

On April 8, Microsoft issued several Windows updates. Some ProSeries customers who installed the updates received an error message (Error Code 4-0) related to ".NET 2.0 SP1" failing to install. Microsoft is working on a resolution for this problem for upcoming releases and in the interim has created a supported tool that can reduce the resolution time to overcome the ?.NET 2.0 SP1 failed install? issue if it occurs. We have posted the tool at http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/knowledgebasearticle/1....

This tool has been tested by Quickbooks support, and Microsoft has successfully used this tool on non-Intuit customers as well.

With the tight time constraints of the April 15th filing deadline behind us, customers should resume their normal practice of accepting Microsoft's recommended updates to minimize risk associated with not being current ... and then run the resolution tool in the link above if there is a problem in running ProSeries or QuickBooks 2008.
