Upon closing qb, I get windows error that qb has stopped working

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows

After I exit quickbooks pro 2008 (vista), I get an error that says quickbooks has stopped working and microsoft will alert me of any fix for the problem. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks, Melissa

I am having a similar problem now with QB pro 2009 and XP. I get this every time I exit:

I have run reboot.bat and did a repair install but this did not help.

As I stated in my message, those procedures did nothing to fix the problem.

I found another post that suggested uninstalling a Microsoft update to the .Net 2.0 Framework, KB976576 and this fixed it.

This should fix your problem until Quickbooks releases a fix to the .NET Frame updates...

I have seen numerous replies with the standard, "See the article on the memory could not be read error" posted on many threads. It appears that doesn't apply to what the majority of people are having problems with on this particular read error. The problem lies within Microsoft's recent updates to the .NET Frame which is causing the memory read error.

Copied and pasted from a microsoft forum:

The problem is from 2 MS updates released on 6/22/10, KB977354 and KB976576.

What you need to do, and so far this is only been confirmed to work on XP, is go to Add/Remove Programs, choose the “Show Updates” box at the top, and scroll down (under Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0) to remove the following update,KB976576.

If this does not fix it, go back and remove this KB977354.

At this point, QB should no longer give an error message when closing.

To prevent this from happening again, you can set windows updates to download and let the user choose which ones to install, pointing out that installing the .NET update again can cause the problem to come back, at least until we have a more solid fix.

So, essentially Microsoft released an update to their .NET Frame that does not work with Quickbooks right now. Surprise, surprise. I have 3 pc's all running QB Pro 2008 under XP. I uninstalled KB976576 on one of them and I no longer get the error. I haven't bothered with the other two pc's because it isn't hurting the functionality or the integrity of my database. It's a bug that is just annoying on closing the program.

If you have Microsoft automatically update your pc then it will just reinstall it again after you uninstall it so you need to switch your Microsoft updates to manually update until Quickbooks can get a fix or Microsoft gets a fix on their side. Anytime Microsoft releases an update to their Netframe's I cringe. They are beyond buggy and they end up causing more problems because they are never tested fully. Then again, Microsoft has never been known to test anything.

Thanks for the replies. I am not going to uninstall the update either because qb is working. Also, do you think the update is also for vista? Thanks Melissa

On vista, I uninstalled KB979899 and KB956250 which were updates on June 22.

This seems to have worked. Melissa
