quickbooks 2012 premier conversion says that this file was not created with the U.S. version of quickbooks
I've been on to Intuit who said that there is no conversion from the U.S. version to the U.K. version. It is completely useless in the UK. (Unless you know different). I get the impression from my phone calls to them that they feel compelled to sell me something every time I call.

Correct - if you have a QuickBooks file in any Non-US format, you cannot open it directly with a US version of the program. The files are not compatible.
You can look into the file transfer utilities from Karl Irvin at www.q2q.us - I believe that you can transfer from one nationality to another (but check with them, I've not tried that).
You may be able to get the folks at www.qbornotqb.com to do the transfer for a fee, but then again you need to check with them to see if they do that.
You can export data to IIF in your file/utilities/export menu, then reload that in a new US file, but that only transfers list data (and not all lists), no transactions.
You can check with the folks at www.baystateconsulting.com to see if their export tool will work with the UK version - and then use their import tool to import to the US version. May take a bit of work because some things are formatted differently.
I've worked with all of the companies I list above, and they are all top notch. However, I've not used any to convert a file from one nationality to another, so you should check with them first.
Thank you for your response. I have been in contact with Awooza UK who sold me the software and they completely refuse to take the product back. Their site logo is a union jack and UK is in the title but they operate from Hong Kong (Which I didn't realise at the time). They said that 'in principle' the product works even though it's completely useless in the UK. It's taken them a month to come to this conclusion. Not a good company. Be warned.
Here's my next question. Ideally I will need two users, so if I buy a UK spec single user version, can I then load the UK version onto both computers and use the US licence for the second user. I cannot see a problem.
What do you think.
I doubt it would work, although I have not tried something like that. When you register a product you have two codes usually, the "license number" and the "product number". The product number for the US and UK versions will be different. I doubt that you can mix licenses with different products. But I haven't tried that particular example.
