Undeposited Funds problem

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2010

My client has a problem with Undeposited Funds. The balance is zero, but there is an item in the Make Deposits screen. If I deposit that item, I now have a balance in UD. How do I get it out of Make Deposits without putting a balance in the acct?

I have seen this when the transaction also has a weird date, like 1900 for the year. You can try rebuilding the data file. I finally restored from the back before the issue showed up, so we lost a day of work.

Also, UF is self-reconciling, so run a Quick Report on it and filter for uncleared transactions. See what shows up.

Thank you for your response.  I tried printing a Quick Report with the date range All, I tried printing a filtered Quick Report which came up empty, and I rebuilt the file 3 times, with no luck.  I looked at the log file, and it showed 12 UF transactions with no payment link, but that only accounts for about half the problem.  They have transactions dating back to 1997, and their file is very large.  I suspect they have a data integrity problem that the rebuild can't fix.  I could probably find the offending transactions, delete them and re-enter them, but I told them they would be better off starting a new file at fiscal year end.  In the meantime, just keep ignoring the payment that comes up in Make Deposits, and make regular backups.  Thanks again.

UF don't come only from Payments, but there should be a transaction such as a payment type of item used on an invoice or sales receipt can be set to "group with undeposited funds" or it is a sales receipt that is "group with undeposited funds" or something. The transaction should exist or the value shouldn't be there.
