Turning on Explorer 8
When I try to open QB pro 2010 I get a fatal error telling me to turn on Internet 8. When I go to the page for turning Windows features on and off, Explorer 8 is not listed ... but the box for Explorer 9 is checked off.

Had this problem last week...
No resolution.....hours with support
Was told to buy 2012....bought it and continue to have the FATAL ERROR. More hours with support but on the third day post purchase i was advised that i did not have a SUPPORT contract. So I appear to be on my own.
If you have the patience to check IE 9 on and off at random intervals - then allow the system to reboot after each reset - QB 12 seems to operate for a session! No prediction for QB 10.
Wish I knew an accounting package that worked with WIN 7 and could import the QB files- do you?
I and several others I have checked with use QB 2012 (I actually have 2009 - 2012 currently installed) with Firefox and do not have this problem. I know QB needs to know that IE is installed, but you don't have to actually use it. It might be worth a try for you to download it.
Actually, IE , Firefox, and Chrome browsers are installed.
Would you suppose that the error would disappear IF IE were the default browser??
This AM I had to turn IE 9 off and exit and turn IE 9 on and exit to open QB 2012.
This work around is creating hash of my registry.

This appears to have been caused by a Microsoft update released on 12/15/2011 that affected Internet Explorer

if not try :
After System Mechanic was uninstalled on my computer Wednesday afternoon (December 28th) and later replaced with CCleaner that same day, I am able to open QuickBooks for almost three days now without getting the QuickBooks Fatal Error You must use "Turn windows features on or off" in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. QuickBooks will now exit. Please switch Internet Explorer 8 ON and try again.
I was disturbed about removing System Mechanic to keep this issue with QuickBooks not opening from reoccurring particularly if I could not use another system cleaner in its place to optimize the performance of my computer. However, so far using the free CCleaner instead of the already paid for System Mechanic has kept the QuickBooks Fatal Error issue from reoccurring as opposed to just a disable and re-enable of Internet Explorer 8.
See the discussions at community.intuit.com/posts/why-am-i-getting-a-quickbooks-fatal-error-message-about-internet-explorer-and-cant-open-quickbooks-now and at community.intuit.com/posts/qb-fatal-error-again-looking-for-ie8-went-from-ie9-to-ie8-yesterday-was-ok-all-day-until-tonight-why-need-help.

Tnx for the links Smoother. Hopefully we can get an update either from intuit or microsoft to permanently resolve this issue.
Hi everyone, the latest from us is that the issue initially occured because of the MS update. However, running the manual steps for turning IE8 or IE9 on and off has been proving successful or running the tool that automates the steps as Jeff mentioned above.
What we have found out is that users with System Mechanic have had the issue repeat due to its registry cleaner removing a value that QB looks at regarding IE. IOLO has steps to prevent this from happenign again, but if you have this fatal eror problem, i would recommend you run the tool located in http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/articles/SL... and that should let you open QB again.
If you have System Mechanic installed, the issue may come back if you run its registry cleaner program until you add an exception to it as smoother was able to ascertain from IOLO support...
Dear Nancy,
You can try excluding the files from being removed by the System Mechanic tools.
- Open the System Mechanic.
- Go to Toolbox> Individual Tools> Repair Problems.
- Click Start under Registry Tuner.
- Under the Exclusion, please click on the checkbox that says "Automatically exclude irreparable items from subsequent searches"
- click ok
- under advanced, check custom optimization and repair
- click next
- Then click Add button.
- Put check under Registry Value and add this registry value: Hkey Local machine\software\wow6432node\microsoft\windows\current version\appP...\Internet explorer
- Then click on Exclude Selected Value.
- Then put check on Exclude Keys, subkeys and values (Recursive) under Registry Name and as well as Partial Text Match OK under Registry Value.
- Press OK.
- Then click Next to finish the process.
Excluding the necessary items from this tool WILL NOT exclude these items from the Power Tools such as PC TotalCare, ActiveCare functions or the 'Repair All' function and it would be best that you run the repairs through the individual toolbox.

Hi Alex Wall,
I have not tried the steps I got to try from iolo because I did have System Mechanic uninstalled on my computer so I am wondering if anyone has tried those steps and whether that has fixed the QuickBooks Fatal Error from reoccurring. Please let us all know.
Hi there, ok heres what we know as of now. This seems to not have been caused by a MS update but from System Mechanic all along. All of the customers we have noticed this issue on have had System Mechanic and ran its registry cleaner. We are working with IOLO engineers to see about getting an update in their program out to address this, but all of the cases i have seen have been resolved by running our tool in the KB (which unchecks and rechecks IE and reboots). If the issue comes back, you would want to add the exception as per the IOLO article until they can get an update out to do it automatically.
Hope this helps and please let me know if anyone has any questions about this issue :)
