Transfer company file from backup drive to main drive

US QuickBooks Pro for Windows : 2011

When my accountant emailed me my company file for 2011 after having gone over it, I did not know how to save it on my C (main) drive, so I saved it on my backup external hard drive and restored from there. Now I get a message that I am doing a backup on the same drive as my company file. How do I now transfer my company file to my C drive? Where does it go in my Program files under Intuit? I have four folders under Quickbooks 2011: Components, Converto3, and Data (as well as HelpResources). Help!

do this outside of QB. in windows, click on MY Computer. you'll see all the drives. open the external drive and locate the .qbb backup file. copy it and then paste it into the C drive.

I am unclear exactly what folder to copy the .qbb backup file to. Do I copy it to the folder "Quickbooks 2011" (under Intuit in my C drive), or to one of the folders under "Quickbooks 2011" , i.e., Components, Convert03, Data, Help Resources? Thanks.

The solution

You can store your data files wherever makes most sense to yu, but the defaults are below.

To move your file, create a backup and then restore it to the folder you chose for your default location.

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\(Shared) Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files

Windows Vista\Windows 7: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files
