That is always an excellent idea (along with experimenting in one of the QB Sample companies); but here is another idea for you as well.
Make a back-up or portable company file of your test company as soon as you have set-up everything and before you try to enter 'test' data. That way, if you wind up liking the test company as you set it up, all you have to do is restore your back-up or portable company file as your 'real' company and you are ready to go.
