We currently have a number of clients using Lacerte on the e-Accounting platform. There are a few tricks to getting it running well, but it certainly can be done.
I've had success with using Lacerte in a VPN environment.
For tax years prior to 2005, I was able to have the telecommuter install only the workstation version & the were able to work with the VPN connection without incident.
For 2005 & 2006, we had to have the client do a full install on their system in to work with the VPN connection; we weren't happy about this, as we had to give them the full version program (download and install), Lacerte doesn't have enough security features to block them from doing certain things. So they can do what they want the program as far asdoing their own client returns with very little obstruction from us.
We are now trying a VM setup where we can send them a DVD or large VM file that is configured the way we want with passwords and restrictions on it to some what limit what they can do with the program.
