!szFileBuffer.empty() error

I have QB2007 Premier and Vista 32-bit. I did have this running fine until 5 days ago, but now for no apparent reason when I launch qb and confirm as an admin that I want to run the program, I get an error box that just says !szFileBuffer.empty(). QB then closes. I have tried two full uninstall/reinstalls, reinstalling to c:\qb2007 the second time to make sure there weren't any permissions problems with Program Files folder. I've applied the release 4 update, enabled the #$&$# out of the program and folder permissions, but same result everytime. I've searched the internet and it appears that this error appeared in prior version of QB, with little help from QB Support, so I'm worried.

This is the full info that Vista provides upon program crash:

thanks Eric, I will try deleting Windows\Intuit and reinstalling.

Could I make two comments on this:

1) Why doesn't quickbooks remove every trace of itself on uninstall? This frustration could have easily been avoided.

2) The search feature in this forum sucks. I certainly did search for szFileBuffer (plus lots of variations) and 0 results were always the case. WHY WHY WHY?????!!!

Hi Dbguy,

1. QuickBooks, and like other software as well, does not remove every trace upon uninstall. When you uninstall a program, it only removes the actual program files but leaves your data files intact. It also needs to write to the registry keys within the Windows operating system. If you really need to remove everything and get a clean uninstall, you may need a 3rd party cleanup tool that will clean up the program plus the registry keys as well.

2. We understand your frustration on the search options in the forums. We are working on a solution for that.

Gets error when try to open QuickBooks "error- !szfilebuffer.empty() ."

I have had a breakthrough in the error- !szfilebuffer.empty() .

To fix the problem create a new directory and place the .dat files in the new folder by going to Windows/Intuit/Shared and under shared you will find some .dat files create a new folder with intuit folder and move all the .dat file to that new folder and make sure the shared folder is empty than , Reinstall the product and it should open fine. my assurance to that ... :rolleyes:

My first post so please excuse any fau paux - I am using QuickBooks Pro 2007 on a Win XP Pro computer (actually running a virtual computer with XP Pro in a Vista machine) and every month or so I get the !szFileBuffer.empty() message when trying to start QuickBooks. Through reading previous forums, I have settled on going to C:\windows\Intuit\Shared and renaming the two .dat files that are just numbers for the names, not the vertical.dat file. I just rename the extension to old or bak. That always lets me start QuickBooks again but I have to go through the activation process again and it never finds me in the activation process and considers me a new customer.
I've never gotten an answer why this happens but renaming those two files has always let me start the program. I'm not sure what is comparable in Vista.

Before you do anything else, I would recomment that you download and run CCleaner @ http://www.ccleaner.com/ which is a top ranked utility that should fix any registry problems you may have.
Reinstalling windows is an extreme solution that will give you on average more headcahes than you already have.
