Switching to multi-user mode

Unable to switch to multi user. QB 2011 is installed on 3 desktop computers as multi-user - no access to this computer. The dbase is in our server. All pc's can access server dbase file and work in single user mode only.  I do not want to make one of the desktop PC's the host. How can I get the server as host (it was host before I upgraded from 2010 to 2011).

Are you sure that the quickbooks program on the server is changed to multi user mode from the administrator? If not, go to the File tab (in quickbooks) then it should say Switch to Single User mode, if not, click on Switch to Multi User Mode! Also be sure that the file is set to Shared!!

if this solved your problem, please mark as solved, if not ask more!

Have you installed the server component of the software on the server?

I have noticed that QB gets stuck sometimes when you are doing things in single-user mode.  Here is how to force it to open a file in multi-user mode.

Close the company file.  Open Quickbooks, but click "Cancel" in the login screen.  in the No Company Open screen, click the "Open or Restore and Existing Company".  In the Open or Restore Company screen, select the "Open a Company File" option, then click "Next>".  In the Open a Company scren, make sure to select the "Open a File in Multi-user mode" option at the bottom of the screen.  Now you can select your company file and open it in multi-user mode.

Thank you!  This helped in resolving a H202 error with switching to multi-user after installing a new router to replace one that had failed on us.  Saved me a lot of troubleshooting when I found this solution.

On your server QB copy, open the QB, go to file, click on "Utilities" and go down to Host-Multi-Users Access. How many users is your QB license for?
