Summarize Payroll Data in Excel - unwanted password prompt

After running report "Summarize Payroll Data in Excel" or "Tax Form Worksheets in Excel" when Excel is closed there is a window in QB that asks for a password. These dialogue boxes are labeled "QBPayrollLink Password", and "QBTaxFormsLink Password".These appear both when you save the worksheet or don't save the worksheet. You have never been prompted initially to enter any password. To "kill" the message, you have to go to Task Manager. This was reported on the payroll forums in previous years, but I find no resolution.I am using QB Version: Pro 2008 andExcel: 2003Does anyone have anything that makes this password box go away...other than killing it with Task Manager? Thanks for the help.

Hi pdevore,
I've spent a good deal of time researching this and have come up with about the same as you have....not much.  Do you have Google Desktop search installed?  There have been other Excel users having problems with this add-on.  Some were able to resolve it by making a setting change in their registry.  Here's a link to the article.
Have you tried these?

  • Restart your system

  • Repair Excel

  • Patch Excel to the latest SP level MS offers

  • Patch your virus checker to its latest releases and virus definition files.

  • Remove all COM Add-ins (such as Google search) from Excel's com add-ins dialog.

  • Let me know if any of these work for you....Steve

Hello Steve-

For QB Pro 2008, installing MS Office 2003 SP3 seems to have corrected the problem.

In QB Pro 2006, the passsword box continues to display. But I did learn that the "magic" number is 12...that is if you click the "cancel" buttton 12 times the box goes away. Or you can go to Task Manager and end the task.

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

Hi!

My client also has this kind of error after sending a direct deposit payroll with QB. She said that the screen wouldn't go away. I checked in THE HIVE if we already have any resolutions for this but the search came out as zero result. My customer would like to know why that screen pops up and how to close it. Thanks!

Are you sure this is the same thing as previously reported? If so, did you try the link posted in a previous message?

I'd also recommend getting the latest updates for your virus checker and for Excel. Sometimes the combination of older versions of these tools cause the odd little password prompt when exiting Excel.

This just started happening to me this quarter, I have been using Pro 2008 for over a year with Office 2003, all patches, etc. in place. The suggested regedit change (from 3 to 2) did not affect it at all. The magic "12" and Task Manager seem to be the only fix. I have had odd results at other times when doing the export/summarization but that was mainly weird data in the spreadsheet itself and corrupted headings on some of the tabs in the spreadsheet, but nothing like this password issue. If anyone has anything new on this, please let me know.
