Split statement indicator is working only on property tax-can the new form 1098 mortgage statement be causing the problem? Why do we have this when the IRS receives a copy of this form? Are we all going to be spending 20% more time on prep because of useless worksheets? Don't you just love the new broker statements and forms for schedule D?
I haven't been entering the 1098 Mortgage Interest statements because of the problem with splitting the returns. I have just been entering it the same way I have in prior years. On the smart worksheet for the mortgage interest paid there is a box to check if it was not reported on a 1098.
Is this going to confuse the issue since it has been reported on a 1098 under the spouses social and my t/p is claiming half of something that is not under her social? Oh, for a flat tax. It must be time to retire. After all, my EA designation doesn't give me the right to do much more than the newly enrolled preparers.
I've never had a problem even though half is reported under the others social security number. If it's a married filing joint return the spouses number is on the taxpayers return anyway.
