Specific industry for each company in QB Premiere 2012

US QuickBooks Premier : 2012: Standard

How do I select a specific industry for each company: training/service business, a non-profit, and a personal account in Premier 2012? I clicked on Help, then Manage my license, and change different industry, but it change all three to same indust.

You are confusing the Program with the data file.

The program is the main tool or "interface" that provides the functions that allow you to manage the data.

The data file is set up to operate for the way the business needs to operate.

All three can be run using straight, plain, vanilla Premier.

Nonprofit has some relabels and some reports that you don't see in the others.

Otherwise, the program is not really different. It still is Premier.

The data files have the Items, customers (donors) and accounting that is specific to the function (services, donations, whatever).

You don't really need to keep changing the program to work with the various data files.

Thank you for your reply.  I guess it just annoyed me to see a "Nonprofit" tab up top in my QB Premiere for my other two companies/accounts (a for-profit and a personal acct).  I obviously want the "Nonprofit" tab there for my third company which is a 501 (c)(3).  I'm just being picky and want it to look "organized."  Is there a way I can delete the "Nonprofit" tab for each specific company within my Quickbooks Premiere (3 companies/accounts total)?  If yes, then how do I go about doing that?

*Someone had told me to choose the "Nonprofit Industry" in order for me to use it.  But once I chose that option, QB labeled and put "nonprofit" tab on all 3 of my companies/accounts.

"QB labeled and put "nonprofit" tab on all 3 of my companies/accounts. "

That is because you chose the "program flavor" of NFP.

The Program controls the interface you see.

The data file is the data.

Look at it like this:

Set the Program to be General Business.

Now open the NFP data file.

I now understand that because I chose "Non-profit" industry, QB puts "Non-profit" on all 3 of my companies.  If I were to change the industry to "General Business" instead of "Non-profit", then how do I open the NFP data file ONLY for my Non-profit company so I can see the "Nonprofit tab"?  Are you referring to "Company", "Company Information...", then "Income tax form used"?  If that's the case, I do have it under "exempt option" and I still don't see the Nonprofit tab for my Non-profit company once I changed the interface/industry to General Business.

The solution

We are explaiing that the Program is the "installed flavor" of General or NFP.

The data file shows the labels and functions because of the flavor-of-the-moment, for the program.

It has nothing to do with Tax form or company info.

Do you use Word? You open Word, which is a program. You work on "documents" which are data files. These are letters, resumes, newsletters, brochures, posters.

Open a poster in Word 2000 and it is a poster.

Open a poster in Word 2010 and it still is a poster. But now you see Word 2010 tools and functions. But it still is a poster.

The difference is in the program and not the data files.
