Diagnostics that #2 qualifying dependent has the same soc sec

as other qualifying dependent. Deleted #2 which was replaced with #3 dependent. same error?????????? What was #3 that was okay is now #2 which has the same soc sec number as another qualifying dependent.

Social Security Number has been the same for a number of years now. I thought it was very unusual when I deleted #2 which move #3 dependent to the #2 postion. Now the son is dependent that has the social security problem. Sounds like a problem with the soft ware.

It might be a corrupt file. I just did someone's return with 2 children, and I got no diagnostic about the 2nd kid's SSN being the same as the first. In fact, one of my client's children qualifies him for the EIC, and there was no problem with that, either.

I'm not sure how to deal with corrupt files. It may require starting a whole new file and doing all the input over again. Hope it doesn't come to that.

Had this happen also, check if you have a dependent care credit, for some reason, the socials were affected here.  I kept checking my individual dependent entries to find that it was the 2441 which was actually the culprit.  Just try it - I know it doesn't make sense.

 I agree that it's likely a 2441 issue.  I've had that happen before, when the entries there went awry.

When you deleted the child on the info w/s, what happened to that child on the 2441?

If you use Pro Series Basic I might not be able to help you. If you use Turbo Tax I might refuse to help you. All others, watch out! ;-)

A few years ago, I had a problem if the same order wasn't maintained with the dependents and the listing on the 2441.  Give that a try..
