Sick pay

QuickBooks UK : Pro 2012

Hi, Someone has gone sick and I want to enter details into quickbooks but don't understand "waiting days". His first 3 days are paid and hes has just given a sicknote from the 4th day - how do I enter into quickbooks please. Thanks John

 Hi Sondardop,

There are various rules surrounding SSP, I'll try sum them up as follows:

  • To qualify for SSP, the employee must be sick for 4 or more working days. (PIW)
  • If there is less than 8 weeks between PIWs (periods of sickness), then these are linked
  • The first 3 days of a PIW or a linked PIW are waiting days and SSP is not paid
  • SSP is paid from day 4 onwards

e.g. if an employee is contracted to work Mon - Fri, and they are sick Mon - Fr, assuming the PIW was not linked, Mon-Wed would be waiting days, and SSP would be paid for Thurs - Fri.  If this was linked to an earlier PIW, SSP would be paid for Mon - Fri.

When entering this into QuickBooks, you would enter the period of sickness as Mon - Fri.  QuickBooks will automatically check if this links to earlier PIWs and apply the waiting days accordingly.

You will need to get the employee to complete a self certification sick note for the first 3 days.

Cheers,

Diana
