The solution
Set a closing date, particularly for previous year end - then you will get a prompt if you try and do anything before it - useful for that; to stop anyone else doing so set a password as well then only you could make any changes if necessary.
Similarly, filing VAT sets a period end closing date and reminder, but you can still make changes.
