Serious IRS program glitches

Is it just me or are any of you also beginning to receive CP2000 letters from the IRS that appear to be an error on their part? One of my clients received correspondence for unreported income where the IRS claimed that a 1099 was not included in his return. It was included on the Sch C (where it belonged) but for some reason the IRS computer missed the entry which was properly entered.Another client had the IRS ask for proof of mortgage interest claimed. On this return, another Sch C, a percentage of the interest was deducted on the 8829 and the balance on the Sch A.I know from media reports that the IRS had problems with 2005 refunds being sent out when they should have been held due to a program failure. I'm just wondering how to find out from them what other problems they are having with the 2005 program. This is very serious for us, the preparer, because the client thinks we are making the mistake, the client is paying to have these issues corrected and the IRS is not going to reimburse the taxpayer my fees for the IRS mistakes.taxea

I have also seen quite a few more CP2000 letters this year. Although all it takes is a phone call or letter to clear it up, it is a royal PITA to have to do it. Fortunately, our clients have been with us for many years and don't panic.

That was exactly my point..the royal PITA part...and that no matter how much you reassure them the client thinks the preparer made the mistake. taxea

Yesterday I received a CP2000 notice from the IRS.
This is the first notice I ever received from the IRS, but this is the most silly notice.

Basically what IRS did is combined all my mortgage
interest payments (I own rental properties as well)
and said that I claimed deduction in my Schedule A.
IRS recalculated my tax and asked me to pay the
amount, penalty and interest. Actually I didn't
claim any of my rental property mortgage interest
on my Schedule.
Did anyone else received or heard this kind of
blunder? It's very hard for me to imagine how
inefficient IRS can be...

I don't know who prepared your tax return. But it sounds like you need a good CPA letter to respond to it.

One of our clients received a CP2000 saying they had not reported a state tax refund of over $7000.
They paid about $600 instead. Sent reply with copy of state tax return and copy of check to state.
