I have quickbooks pos on my register and quickbooks pro on my laptop. Can I download my inventory from the register to my laptop without having to retype everything?

well - you really don't download the inventory, that's just not quite the way it works. QBPOS updates QBFS with the relevant transactions that would impact your accounting data.
If you want to keep the accounting data on your laptop, consider simply networking the two with a simple router, load QBFS on the machine that is your pos server, link to the accounting data within QBFS from the new installation over the network and then you can use QBPOS company preferences to make the connection. Then, when you run the end of day process, the QBPOS data will sync with QBFS.
Be careful about just doing the sync - there is a bunch of history in QBPOS that may impact your data and depending on the version you may or may not be able to stop manually entered transactions from coming through. Also, you will pretty much need to understand how things post and what to do with them when they get there. It is not hard - you just need to understand it.
