Sales using only barcode, not manually entered text

QuickBooks Point of Sale

Is there a way to avoid entering a product manually using its name in a sale? This practice increases mistakes. For example sometimes cashiers enter "Gatorade" and there are 5 gatorade flavors, and inventory starts to go silly. Then when taking a physical unnecesary adjustments have to be made.

For items that have an existing barcode on them (such as Gatorade) you would want to go into the edit item screen.  Once there you should see a UPC field.  If you click in that field and scan the barcode that is on the product it will populate the field with 13 numbers.  After that click save.  Go to the make a sale screen and scan the barcode on the item you just edited.  If the items do not have an existing barcode you will need to type 13 numbers in the UPC field.  If you have a printer that can print tags (the Zebra 2824/2844 printer is compatible) you can then go to the 'I Want To>Print Tags'.

Hope this answered your question, if so please mark solved so others may benefit from the solution.

There is not a way to stop someone from entering the items by typing the name though.

You can create barcodes using the Item # or ALU - you do not have to create a UPC to have a barcode to scan items in when ringing up sales.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I will try this second one, sounds neat. I want to stop cashiers from using text, text confuses inventory cause cashiers find it easy to just write down letters and comes the dropdown list.

Thanks again for your replies.

Marco, I advise my clients to take full use of existing product barcodes to ensure that all items are scannable at the point of sale. This speeds up the sales process and virtually eliminates errors.

Hello Banks. Thanks for your reply. Sometimes it happens that for example a plastic bottle, a can or a barcode sticker are difficult to scan, so the cashier uses the drop down list and makes the mistakes.

Marco, some of my clients print out pos labels for their frequent items and put them on a price sheet for scanning. Often the clerks then memorize the item number ant simply enter it.
