Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! During this time, you can shop, but can’t place orders online, activate products or update account info. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for patience while we improve our infrastructure to better serve you. International versions are unaffected. For more info, see our community discussion.

I reviewed your site at www.thenationalschooluniformba... and here are a few suggestions to help you get the most out of your web site.

This is a very clean and precise layout, which implies integrity and trust - that's a good thing for a non-profit. But there are a few things you could do to improve the impression you make on people when they arrive here.

About Design -

  • Look into resizing some of the overlaid images to better fit the design you're covering up.
    • there's obviously a background image in use underneath your layout, which you're using to frame out your images - great use of an existing background. The only hitch is that on the top left, most of the images are not correctly sized or placed. Crop them for size and position them to fit within that green box, while showing a few pixels of the green around the bottom and right edges (where the black divider line is). You'll also want to do this with the apple image at the top right on the Donations page.
  • I feel like the photos of students in school uniforms conveys your overall idea better than the images of uniforms alone or images of school items. You can usually get inexpensive stock photos online. Check out iStockPhoto.com or some place like that. The "kids" need to be in the photos.
  • Get a friend to read over your copy for you, starting at the bottom and read from from right to left (yep, backwards) and spell check for you. Reading backwards actually makes it easier to spot doubled words, doubled letters, missing words and letters ( the word "uniform" is missing from a couple of instances of your business name) and words that are in the wrong order.
  • Check your "S.U.E.D.E. page - I think you meant to use "Every Day" (two words) instead of "everyday" (which actually means something else). I'm also not sure where the last E in SUEDE is coming from...
  • Consider changing your text color to something more neutral like a very dark gray, navy blue or even traditional black, all of which are easier to read than orange.
  • Have your web designer check the mouse-over nav buttons to make sure there are alternate links to internal pages - when I reviewed your page with an SEO link follower tool, it registered no links to your other two pages - as a result, when Google spidered your site earlier this month, it only recorded the main page, not the other two.

For converting visitors into Donors, the main ingredient you are missing is the opportunity to engage the visitor.

  • Provide an easy way for visitors to donate on the spot
    • include a quick Paypal link
    • include a form someone can fill out to notify you of items they have to donate
    • include a form for visitors who are interested in volunteering or starting a branch in another city
  • Create a graphical button or icon asking for donations and test this for effectiveness versus the plain text you are using now. Sometimes an icon or graphic will make more of an impression because it requires less thought. Try something like "Only $52," or "Make a Child's Day" or "Sponsor a Student Today" as a big red button.
  • Make sure you specifically list the cities/areas you serve. Your name is "national" but your online information indicates that you are locally operated - let people know whether or not they are located within your service area.
  • If you are registered as a non-profit organization, post your credentials.
  • Submit your organization name to national lists of charities (if you haven't already), then include links to the non-profit organizational lists you're on. Anything you can do to improve your trust-factor is a good thing for conversions.
  • Consider putting together a bullet checklist of benefits - this can be benefits to the donor (tax deduction, warm fuzzy feeling, etc) or benefits to the students (well-fitting uniforms, improved self-esteem, etc) or both. The decision to contribute is easier to make when the benefits are enumerated in black and white.
  • Work on your meta keywords and keyword density on these text-heavy pages so that search engines know what keywords you're trying to be relevant to.

I hope there's something useful in here that you can use as you continue to refine your web presence. Great idea for a web site - speaking as someone with 5 step-children who all have to wear uniforms to school!
