first thing i would do is go to Help > Update QB and see if it works then.

First, make sure you copy the backup from an external drive to your hard disk and restore from there.

Are you trying to restore a backup that was created with your current computer and QB version? If so, and it fails, you may have a corrupt file.
First, hold down the CTRL key while you click on the QB icon to oepn it; hold the key down until QB opens. See if you can open, e.g., a sample company. If so, your QB should be OK.
If you created the backup from a different computer, try creating a new backup. You can also try restoring the backup to a different computer, if available. If that works, create a new backup and try to restore that to your computer.
