Restaurant Chart of Accounts?

Does anyone have a Sample Chart of Accounts for a Restaurant?

I have never worked with a restaurant before, and I realize a simple chart of accounts may work. I was wondering if anyone had worked with a restaurant before and had a chart of accounts, more customized to the needs of a restaurant. I am meeting with the owner tomorrow and will have more detail after that; however, he did mention about payroll, and there are specific issues particular to the restaurant business to be dealt with here.

Any assistance would be appreciated,

Regards,

Martin

Martin,

I have worked for and with several restaurants. In the restaurants I have come across they expressed to me that the following were important:

- Utilities with separate totals water, gas, electricity etc.

- Wages - servers, kitchen, bar separate totals

- Purchases - kitchen vs. bar

- Income - kitchen vs. bar

Most often I get asked about getting a write off for donated food. So be prepared with an answer to that one.

Often the big accounting / QuickBooks issue with restaurants is that daily sales receipt entry summarizing the till(s) for the day. It can be a monster especially if they allow "pay outs" from the till(s).

Best of luck

Suzi

Martin, here is what I've found/used. Hope it helps. Formatting is all balled up probably. Can e-mail you a formatted version if you drop me a line at dickbash@bashlaw.com
