ProSeries : 2011

My clients return keeps rejecting with this error code. What wold be my next steps?

Reject Code F1040a-512
(The Dependent SSN must notbe the same as the Primary or Secondary on another return in which the SSN was claimed as an exemption.)

Client states that no one else is using the dependents...according to the children.

Is there a way to determine which dependent is in question and do you know of any available IRS help (contact) for this issue.

Thanks.

Sounds like the dependent kid e-filed and claimed themself.

If my post did not answer your question, get a paid Intuit employee's answer for Lacerte questions at 800-933-9999. Oh, and enjoy the elevator music while you wait.

Sounds like the dependent was already claimed or already filed and claimed themself.  You could check with your client and have them find out.  If that's the case you would either need to remove the dependent (if they shouldn't have claimed them) and efile or print and mail the return in.

If this does not answer your question hopefully someone else will be along to help.

I'd bet one of Phoebe's shiny new nickels that one of the 2 scenarios that Wonderwoman pointed out has happened.

The other scenario is that some who did their own return with TT had fat finger syndrome and transposed a couple of numbers.

Hail Cleo-Cat-Tra, Queen of Denial. I didn't do it.

I would call the e-file helpline and have them check which dependent.  Then you will know.

I took the oldest child off the retrun and got it thru. Looks like identity theft going on here... according to client and her child. Thanks for all your help.

To Dusty, that seems like the best solution but I'm not sure how the client wants to proceed.

To Mojocpa, the child is 19.

Ysipp:

Did the child work?

How much did the child make?

Was the child in school for 5 months last year?

Did the child claim themselves?

She had some workstudy assignments to the tune of $147. Yes to 5 months, she's a full time student and no to claim herself...she's sticking to her story on that.

It would have to be either someone that knows the dependent's SSN and first 4 letters of the last name or someone real lucky to match both of them up and not get rejected.  I would personally check on the child's other parent, if alive.

From what I have managed to find.... the problem is in the education area.  for MA resident it's form #8863 go through the entire credit/deduction/tax area and input everything.  double check ss# and amounts of loans.  I took the deduction last year and didn't this year and it got rejected because I didn't fill it out even though she was a student.  Not sure if this will be the fix or not, but when push came to shove this was the error for Me and the code was also F1040A-512... good luck

I have the same reject code with my return and was wondering if it had something to do with the education area also. Still can't figure it out.
