Why are they not a vendor? Anyone you pay money (except employees) is a vendor -- suppliers, office supplies stores, the landlord, utility companies, banks for loans, etc. are all vendors.
Sandy, there's a big difference between paying someone for goods and services (a vendor) and refunding money to a customer.
I realize that. The questioner did not say that he was making payments to a customer or what type of "entity" it was. He said it shouldn't be a vendor. In my work for a cpa firm we often times enter payees as Other Names so they don't show up on the 1099 list. Such entities as utility companies, banks, etc., however I wasn't given information from the questioner as to what type of "entity" he was talking about, so I was giving general information of how to change from a vendor to an other name. I have had clients enter customers as vendors and vice versa and the method I wrote about works in these situations. The questioner may have been referring to a customer, or not, we really don't know. Have a great day.

You'll have to do this in a multiple of actions. First, go into the vendor that you don't want and add a digit to the name. Then save the change. Then go into the "other list" or whatever type you really want this entity to be and create a new "other" name. Then go back to the vendor. On the side listing the transactions, make the transactions dates "all" and then start double clicking on each transaction listed. Change the name to the new "other" name. Then once all transactions for the old vendor are changed to the new name, you can then delete the old vendor.
