Important Announcement! A planned system-wide upgrade will take place over the Memorial Day Weekend in the US (From Thurs, May 24, 2012 at 6 pm PDT thru Tues, May 29, 2012 at 5 am PDT). This includes QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, Point of Sale, & Salesforce.com. This is only for US based products. This does not affect QuickBooks Online customers! During this time, you can shop, but can’t place orders online, activate products or update account info. We apologize for the inconvenience & thank you for patience while we improve our infrastructure to better serve you. International versions are unaffected. For more info, see our community discussion.

received an e-mail - Intuit Update Notification

This is a snipet of the text, please confirm if it is a legit email because I don't see any notices on your web site. The link provided took me to quickbooks-intuit.org. Everything about the email looked legit except my catching that one oddity. If you go to that site, it only prompts you to download an .exe file which I did not do.

--------snipet----------
As is the case with many companies that maintain large databases of information, Intuit is the target of illegal attempts to get access and extract information from its database. We recently learned our database was illegally accessed and certain contact and account data were taken, including QuickBooks names, email addresses, phone numbers. The data accessed does not include banking information.

Immediately upon learning about this, Intuit initiated an investigation and took corrective steps. It is important to know the company continually monitors for any illicit use of information in our database, and so far, we have not detected the misuse of this information.
In order to help assure the security of your information, we have developed a special plug-in for browser and Windows® - QuickBooks Update. This software will protect users private information from any sorts of spyware or malware.

System requirements :
• Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x
• Windows XP, Vista, 2000, 2003

ATTENTION: You will not be able to use our service without update from 17 of November 2009

Download :
• Windows® QuickBooks Update <link was attached here>
• Web-Browser plugin <link was attached here>

If you are not Microsoft Windows® user you can use our services as usual
---------------- end snipet-----------------

Please advise as this could be getting to many others. The thing that was the tricky part in knowing if it was a 'real' message, was that it was sent to an email I ONLY use for sending invoices through your system and NO WHERE ELSE. So I hope this is a legit message, or else there IS something to be concerned about in a hack on your system.

Thank you,
Adam

This is a user community.  While some Intuit staff do participate, you should probably contact Intuit (Sales/Service) directly.

Thank you. I am aware that it is a User Area. What better place to see if others have also experienced this and already had an answer. Secondly, what better place to bring it to the attention of others to not get duped since this was the first place I came to from the Support page on Intuit for an answer.

For those that are interested, I did finally get someone at Support and they said there was a problem with the quickbooks.com company which is in the USA with their system getting hacked for e-mail addresses earlier this year. So if you used the e-mail sending feature under the Business Services section in Reminders, then you will or were likely a victim.

Regards, Adam

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and bringing this to our attention.  QuickBooks does not send out e-mails asking you to download anything. This email is NOT from Intuit.  I highly suggest people be aware of suspicious emails or anything in particular that comes from the internet.  There was an FAQ on this issue couple of months ago- I received an email asking me to download a toolbar to fix a security threat.  Is this email safe?

If we do have any patches or fixes for QuickBooks, we generally announce it on our Support Pages in the Product Updates area.  Usually the updates will come down as automatic updates via QuickBooks.

Eric

 Hi host_eric

I was very glad to see your prompt response to this, though I did not have this problem. It bothers me since I do not believe Intuit ever had such a lost data case, though the user said a support agent said it happened..

I got something similar today called "Intuit Update" from "Intuit Company". Typically, the English usage is poor so it's fairly obvious but I just wanted people to be aware of it. It comes from a YAHOO account, not from Intuit:

Received: from [69.147.92.227] (helo=smtp114.biz.mail.sp1.yahoo.com)
by s4.spamcurb.com (Exim 4.71) with smtp id 1NyqKo-0006Cx-9G

The text is as follows. Please DELETE it and don't click on the links:

    Dear Mr(s).
We strongly suggest you to have an authorized Digital Certificate to have right of entry Intuit after 10 of April 2010. You can certainly do it by installing and running your Intuit digital certificate on your computer. This procedure is autoprogrammable and is very fast. You have to submit a Digital Certificate electronically to prove your identity or your right to use information or services online. It is used with the intention to make it possible to prove someone claim that they have the right to use a given key, helping to avert people from using false keys to impersonate other users. Your internet browser uses digital certificates to strengthen the safety of your online sessions with Intuit.
However , your concerns about confidentiality and safety might be preventing you from taking advantage of this new medium for your basic record. Encryption alone is negligible, as it provides no verification of the identity of the sender of the encrypted information. Without special protections you risk being passed off online. Digital Certificates take up the issue, presenting an electronic means of verifying someones identity. Used in combination with encryption, Digital Certificates offer a more complete security solution, assuring the identity of all parties engaged in a transaction.
The Intuit server has its personal digital certificate to assure you that you are actually linking with Intuit and not with an spoofer terminal.
To obtain your personal Digital Certificate, please download and install the Digital Certificate generation tool. When installed, follow the instructions to complete the generation process. Remember, that your Digital Certificate will run off after one year, and you won’t be able to continue working with the Intuit after that. You will be notified to enter an automatic regenerative process 30 days prior to certificate termination.
System requirements :
•    Mozilla FireFox 2.0 and above
•    Windows XP, Vista, 2000, 2003, Seven
•    Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x
ATTENTION: You will not be able to use our service without update from 10 of April 2010
Download :
•  Digital Certificate generation tool for Quickbooks Users
•  Digital Certificate generation tool for Intuit Merchant holders
•  Digital Certificate generation tool for PayCycle customers
•  Digital Certificate generation tool for Quicken users
If you are not Microsoft Windows user you can use our services as usual

Hi PhilWells,

Thanks for bringing that to our attention.  This is a Phishing email that has in circulation for the past couple of months.  Please ignore it and delete it immediately.  It is not a legitimate email from Intuit.  I'll pass this on to our Security division, as they are better suited to identify and establish the veracity or lack thereof, of these types of emails.

I got it today, too.  I am concerned as to how my email address even got on some *list* somewhere.  The address it was sent to was also very rarely used. Rarely, like I think only Intuit.
