I guess you're asking about Schedule F? That would be somewhere on screen 19. I don't see anything right up at the top of that screen -- either in "sales of livestock" or "cost of livestock" -- about the length of time you held the livestock. If you're asking about something else, like depreciation, I would guess it's screen 22 but then what method you pick is out of my league.

Back up before it's too late. For a professional answer, call Tech Support at 1-800-933-9999 (Lacerte)(other numbers ProSeries, QB, or TurboTax). I am a volunteer, not compensated or supported by Intuit.

Raised livestock held more than 2 years get capital gains treatment.

I'll see if I can figure out how you input. I'm guessing you put it on Screen 17.

If I wanted phone calls, my phone number would be in my profile. If you have a question, post it in the applicable forum.

I think the right answer is Part III of the Form 4797.

Input on Screen 17.1 Dispositions.

Description ("Raised Livestock Held More Than 2 Years" is a good one)

Date Acquired (born)

Date Sold

Sales Price

Basis (zero unless unicap applies)

Then go down to the 4797 Section

Depreciation Allowed: -1 (triggers 4797, not Sch D)

If I wanted phone calls, my phone number would be in my profile. If you have a question, post it in the applicable forum.

According to the instructions for the 4797, raised cows should be reported on part 1 of form 4797.

In lacerte on screen 17.1 dispositions, after making the depreciation allowed -1 in the 4797 section like you said, I checked the form 4797, part I box, so it reports on part I instead of part III. This is an override box, but I don't know how else to do it, to make it appear on part I.

thanks

Ah, thank you! Our cattle rancher hasn't been selling raised cows, just bred heifers, so I hadn't needed to know the right presentation.

The F1 help on the Form 4797 Part I override field does say that the purpose of the override is to get the right answer for raised livestock.
